“Leadership is getting involved and getting your hands dirty. Anyone can stand to the side and comment on what other are doing, but being a leader is being a 'doer' and making a difference in an area where you have a passion. No matter the topic of your passion, whether it be in faith, children, community events, cancer research, or anything else, you must be involved if it is truly a passion. Otherwise, in my opinion, it’s only something of interest and not a passion. Even if you can’t physically get involved, you can get involved financially or in a supportive role. Servant leadership is a powerful thing.”

Leadership to me means taking initiative to recognize an issue that needs help and believing that you can take it on while doing the right thing for the organization, even if it is going to be difficult. It is also imperative to ask for help when you need it and always give credit to your team. Another important piece of leadership is continuing to find learning opportunities that help broaden your horizons.

Leadership Texarkana offers a comprehensive view of the community from education to government to non-profit agencies, healthcare, and economic development.  It provides a platform for all of these entities to work together for the betterment of the community.   It has given me the opportunity to meet so many incredible people who have become lifelong friends.  Leadership Texarkana has also given me the opportunity to make connections and network with others to build stronger organizations and events not only in my profession but also in my work as a volunteer.  It has encouraged me to become much more involved my community.

What does leadership mean to you?
I see leadership from a servant leader’s heart.  I do not ask of others what I am not willing to do myself.  I strive to lead by example.

"Control is not leadership; management is not leadership; leadership is leadership. If you seek to lead, invest at least 50 percent of your time in leading yourself--your own purpose, ethics, principles, motivation, conduct. Invest at least 20 percent leading those with authority over you and 15 percent leading your peers." --Dee Hock  I love this quote because it hits on how leadership is not just taking charge.  I believe servant leadership is a way of life.

Leadership is... "Doing what’s necessary to make your organization great, and keeping it great.  Leadership is action, and not words.  We can all sit around and come up with great ideas, but if we’re not willing to get in the mud and do something, then it’s useless.  Then once you’ve created a great organization, you’ve got to make sure you’ve taught others around you how to keep it going after you are gone.  Sustainability is the difference in great leaders."

Leadership Texarkana Class of 2011

“Leadership” has many definitions depending on what a person’s life perspective is. To me, the embodiment of a perfect leader is Jesus. Leadership is not a dictatorship, it is servanthood. Leadership is serving others and not being served yourself.  There are times that leaders must make hard choices, they seem unpleasant and unpopular. However, leaders must be able to see past their present situation and into the vision of where they want to be five years, ten years, even twenty years down the road. Leaders must be able to make the hard decisions that are for the greater good in the long run. “
