What have you learned most about making a difference in Texarkana (or about your opportunity for community leadership) from being a part of Leadership Texarkana?

Being involved in Leadership Texarkana has shown me that individuals who care about our community can make a positive difference. Each year I see participants go through the ‘Class of 30’ and graduate to community involvement in areas all around Texarkana Texas and Texarkana Arkansas. As an example, I love seeing the signs around Texarkana that say “We are In”. This is a Leadership Texarkana class’s effort to encourage us all to keep Texarkana clean, neat, green, and pretty.

What does leadership mean to you?

Community Leadership is a special subset of Leadership. It is different because it requires someone to give their time, abilities, and effort to a cause that may not always see fruits in the short term. Community Leadership is sometimes only evident months or years after the leader has made the investment of a lifetime. Although the visible results may lag behind the effort, that doesn’t mean that Community Leadership is a thankless job. The immediate benefits include getting to know the best people in town and working with them towards a great goal. The relationships with others interested in improving the community are golden! As I have worked with Leadership Texarkana, I have seen the best of the best of Texarkana, committing time, energy, and finances to the cause of making Texarkana better.

For what community organization or issue or opportunity do you have a passion and invest your time, talent or money?

I serve on the LT board and mostly support the mission by helping the organization maximize technology to achieve its goals. This has been my major emphasis for the last 7 years of serving on the board. We have changed and updated our Internet presence multiple times as technology has changed over the years and I have helped keep those projects moving.

What do many people not know about you that you would to share with us?   What are some of your passions and hobbies?

I really enjoy my work as a Professor. There is a quote attributed to Confucius that says, “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” While I sometimes feel like the day-to-day responsibilities of teaching feel like work, when I look at the big picture, I find that helping others learn is a true joy that I get to experience regularly.

What do you most love to do in Texarkana?

I love being part of my church family, Fellowship Bible Church. The people that I get to spend time with there are a great positive influence on my life and my family. I get to rub shoulders with people who are trying their best to live by Biblical principles and who, like me, are learning how to apply those principles in everyday life.
