North Heights Receives Coveted Shannon Wright Award

During the Arkansas Association of Middle Level Education (AAMLE) Fall Conference held in Hot Springs, AR, on Tuesday, October 31, North Heights Junior High was announced as the Arkansas 2017 Shannon Wright Award recipient. AAMLE presents the award to schools that demonstrate outstanding achievement in the implementation of the best middle level practices as outlined in the report Turning Points: Preparing American Youth for the 21st Century.

The coveted Shannon Wright Award has recognized one exemplary middle level program in Arkansas each year since its inception in 1999. The award derives its name from Shannon Wright, a middle school teacher who died in the tragic Westside Middle School shooting incident in March 1998.

In addition to receiving the Shannon Wright Award, In separate action, North Heights was recently recognized by the Office of Education Policy (OEP) as being a school that is exhibiting Outstanding Educational Performance in Arkansas. North Heights is one of the top ten junior high schools in the state that received the Beating the Odds in Math award – based on the ACT Aspire Math achievement.

“It is an honor to be selected as the recipient of the Shannon Wright Award. I am extremely proud of the hard work and diligence that our staff and students put forth each day,” commented NHJH Principal Theresa Cowling. “As principal, it is a joy to watch the growth taking place in our school and I am delighted about our accomplishments.”

Staff and students will have a celebration on November 17, at 1:45 p.m. in the North Heights gymnasium.
