What have you learned most about making a difference in Texarkana (or about your opportunity for community leadership) from being a part of Leadership Texarkana?

Leadership Texarkana has revealed the tremendous importance of identifying and working with your natural partners in the community to accomplish your goals, and I think it’s worth mentioning that this not only makes the stream of progress flow more freely but also has the oft overlooked effect of allowing your goals to grow too!

What does leadership mean to you?

Serving to the point that people trust you to lead; you can’t lead with humility until you’ve first served earnestly, to gain nothing but the self-satisfaction of making a positive impact.

For what community organization or issue or opportunity do you have a passion and invest your time, talent or money?

As a resident downtown and a board member of Main Street Texarkana, I’m an advocate for culturally enhancing downtown (some big ole murals yall!) into a creative corridor that will be a catalyst to further commerce.

If you had one wish and could make a difference of significance in Texarkana (your small corner) what would you do with that one wish and why?

I fully grasp the consequences of this wish, but I wish that in Texarkana and Texarkana alone, that when you throw trash on the ground or out of your car window, you’ll turn into a jellyfish; not a dead jellyfish, just a jellyfish that’s still alive and has to ponder the future path of their life as a litterer.

What do many people not know about you that you would to share with us?  What are some of your passions and hobbies?

I never check the weather forecast, and every morning my wife asks me what the weather is going to be like, and I just say it might rain.

I’m left-handed, but I play the guitar right-handed and cannot throw a frisbee with either hand.

I think it’s crazy that Bayer might be merging with Monsanto; are we going to seriously let the folks who sell us medicine dictate the nourishment of the food that’s supposed to in and of itself nourish us?

What do you most love to do in Texarkana?

I like to watch people interact with each other around town. We are blessed to have such a wonderful caring community that is so tightknit for a city the size of Texarkana, USA; it is very unusual, and it’s inspirational to see a community come together for the likes of the Rotary Flag Project, or to support a fallen officer’s family, or to help the region’s less fortunate.

The next time you are travelling, and you’re passing through a community the size of Texarkana, take heed: Is there new construction everywhere? Are the streets clean? Do the people smile at you? Is the door open before you can extend your arm?

What do you most love about Texarkana, in general?

That it is not Wichita Falls, Texas.
