PROFILE: Wes Kirkham

Wes Kirkham
Executive Director of Instructional Services
Texarkana ISD
LT Class of 2014

What have you learned most about making a difference in Texarkana (or about your opportunity for community leadership) from being a part of Leadership Texarkana?

My participation in Leadership Texarkana reinforced the importance of taking advantage of leadership opportunities and the importance of involvement in organizations that are doing great things to better our community.  Since participating in Leadership Texarkana, in addition to my professional affiliations and church involvement, I serve as the club secretary for the Oaklawn Rotary Club, serve on the board for Junior Achievement, and have facilitated  Today’s Youth Tomorrow’s Leaders as a graduate of Leadership Texarkana.

What does leadership mean to you?

We have all heard many definitions of leadership, and ... I believe that servant leadership is the most effective type of leadership.  Leadership is about influencing and inspiring others to action.

Leaders communicate a clear vision while demonstrating character and integrity.  Leaders treat people the way they would want to be treated and do the right thing for people and organizations.

For what community organization or issue or opportunity do you have a passion and invest your time, talent or money?

One of my passions is my involvement in my church where I teach a Sunday morning Bible class and lead a home Bible study.  After thirty-one years in education, I also still have a passion for students and for education.  I am passionate about providing students with a superior educational experience and also meeting the needs of individual students by participating in mentoring programs.

What do many people not know about you that you would to share with us?   What are some of your passions and hobbies?

I have never been on a cruise or out of the United States, but I love taking road trips all over America and have been in most of the states.  I feel so fortunate to live in this great and beautiful nation and never get tired of visiting and exploring new places.

What do you most love to do in Texarkana?  What do you most love about Texarkana, in general?

I love the small town feel of Texarkana while still having so many options for entertainment and great dining.  I also love the location of Texarkana…just a few hours from Dallas, Shreveport and Little Rock.  I enjoy all the beautiful places in Arkansas to hike that are just a short drive from Texarkana, but mostly it’s the people of Texarkana who make Texarkana such a great place to live and work!
